Avoid Getting the Flu

You may experience a hoarse cough, a stuffy nose, and feel sore even though you’re long overdue for a workout.  Are you experiencing a cold, or do you have the flu?

The symptoms of the common cold and the flu are very similar.  Some of the similarities include:

  • Dry cough
  • Runny or stuffy nose
  • Watery eyes

But the biggest differences between common cold and flu symptoms is that the flu comes on very suddenly, will cause you to have a high fever, and you should get antibiotics to treat the illness. 

The flu virus can enter your body through your nose, eyes, and mouth.  If you’re constantly touching these areas with your hands, you are potentially infecting yourself with the virus.  Getting the common cold can go away without treatment, whereas getting the flu can leave you feeling sick and bedridden for weeks at a time if not treated properly.  Influenza is more severe than a common cold and if not treated soon enough, it can lead to hospitalization or become fatal. 

The most important things you can do to prevent the harmful effects of the flu is to constantly wash your hands throughout the day and get vaccinated for the flu.
