The New Outbreak of Lung Illness Associated with E-cigarettes, or Vaping

There are current reports in most states about acute severe lung illness that has been tied with e-cigarettes or vape pens. There is not a common product that has been reportedly used by the affected patients, although the main products reported are THC based liquids and Nicotine. The center for disease control continues to investigate this new outbreak.

So far these are the facts:

  • There are 1,299 cases of lung injury reported from 49 states and 1 U.S. territory.

  • 26 deaths have been confirmed in 21 states, including two from Oregon.

  • Nearly three fourths (72%) of cases are male.

  • Two thirds (67%) of cases are 18 to 34 years old.

  • 16% of cases are under 18 years and 17% are 35 years or older.

  • All reported cases have a history of e-cigarette product use or vaping.

If you are using these devices and have new symptoms, including shortness of breath, increase work of breathing, chest pain, or symptoms of feeling sick, stop using your e-cigarette or vape pen and see a doctor immediately.
